Looking Towards Autumn…
Owning a garden means always looking ahead to the next season. With a bit of luck, we may enjoy a few more weeks of warm weather but it's always good to put a plan in place for the trees & hedges in your care as we look towards autumn. Here's a few of our top tips!
Hedge Cutting -
Autumn is the ideal time to book in hedge cutting as we are generally out of nesting bird season. It is still wise to monitor trees & hedges and check for bird activity before they are due to be cut.
Have Deadwood Removed -
Autumn is also a good time to have deadwood removed to ensure there are no hazardous branches as we head towards the wet & windy season, especially if the tree overhangs cars, homes, fields with animals etc.
Tree Planting -
Autumn is a good season to have trees & hedges planted before the ground freezes. Trees & hedges planted in autumn will also require less watering and maintenance than those planted in spring & summer.
General garden checklist for autumn:
Think about purchasing frost protection fleece for young, exotic trees.
Take down empty nesting bird boxes and clear them out as they can harbour parasites.
Think about mulching around trees & fragile hedging to allow it to compost down over winter.
Clear up leaves and debris, including rotten fruit, from around the base of the tree to discourage pests growth of fungus.
